Kits – Hydrogen generators are available in kit form from many manufacturers. 
 
These kits allow you to supplement the use of gasoline in your engine, by injecting hydrogen gas into the manifold in conjunction with gasoline. The result is decreased fuel consumption and decreased emissions. 
 
The kits usually work through the process known as electrolysis, though other, less common methods can be used as well. 
 
Electrolysis is simple and has been around for a very long time. This process allows you to break down water (or another source material) by supplying an electric current, through two electrodes placed into the water. 
 
When an electric current passes through the electrodes, water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then sent to the engine, while the oxygen is released into the atmosphere or injected into the manifold, as well. 
 
Of course, this is an oversimplification, but it provides a look at the underlying process involved. 
Fuel Cells - While fuel cells are usually mentioned on their own merits, they are types of hydrogen generators.
 
These use hydrogen gas, rather than a source material such as water. When the gas is passed through the fuel cell, it creates an electric current. 
 
In some types of fuel cell, platinum is used to help create this charge. The electric charge is then used to power an electric motor, running the vehicle in place of an internal combustion engine. 
   
Fuel cells are remarkable creations and research is ongoing to make them more refined and more reliable.

One of the largest drawbacks associated with these hydrogen generators is the size of the solution.  Because one cell produces only a very small charge, many fuel cells must be combined to operate a vehicle.

Custom Made Solutions – While these are very similar to kits (they use the same principle), custom made solutions require their own entry.

Most kits are an attempt to fit all vehicles with the same hydrogen solution.

However, this can result in less than optimal operation.  Because all vehicles are different, hydrogen generators should be custom made to fit the need.

For instance, you would not use the same generator on a heavy-duty pickup truck as you would on a compact car.

Custom made hydrogen generators are considerably more beneficial than their kit counterparts are and can offer better efficiency in terms of both the amount of hydrogen produced and reliability.
